New England topographical map

This is the latest release of the downloadable topo map for Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Vermont.

This free map is as good, if not better than any commercial maps you can buy for your Garmin GPS. Doing a map of this quality requires a considerable amount of computing power, disk space and Internet bandwidth. Please consider supporting this project.

Data Sources

The GIS data sets utilized for creating these maps were obtained from the following sources:

US Census Bureau Topologically Integrated Geographic Encoding and Referencing (TIGER) - http://www.census.gov/geo/www/tiger/index.html

The Census Bureau's MAF/TIGER Enhancements Program seeks to achieve a high level of map coordinate accuracy in TIGER by acquiring and using, as a first priority among data sources, digital files prepared and provided by state, local and tribal governments. The Census Bureau will have its contractors (the folks who will actually perform the much needed TIGER realignment work) use all high-accuracy state, local and tribal government GIS files (that meet or exceed our street center-line spatial accuracy requirement of 7.6 meters and are provided without royalty or copyright restriction.

USGS National Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) - http://geonames.usgs.gov/pls/gnispublic

The U.S. Board on Geographic Names is a Federal body created in 1890 and established in its present form by Public Law in 1947 to maintain uniform geographic name usage throughout the Federal Government. The Board comprises representatives of Federal agencies concerned with geographic information, population, ecology, and management of public lands. Sharing its responsibilities with the Secretary of the Interior, the Board promulgates official geographic feature names with locative attributes as well as principles, policies, and procedures governing the use of domestic names, foreign names, Antarctic names, and undersea feature names.

USGS Dataset Elevation Dataset (NED) - http://ned.usgs.gov/

The USGS National Elevation Dataset (NED) has been developed by merging the highest-resolution, best quality elevation data available across the United States into a seamless raster format. NED is the result of the maturation of the USGS effort to provide 1:24,000-scale Digital Elevation Model (DEM) data for the conterminous US and 1:63,360-scale DEM data for Alaska. The dataset provides seamless coverage of the United States, HI, AK, and the island territories. NED has a consistent projection (Geographic), resolution (1 arc second), and elevation units (meters). The horizontal datum is NAD83, except for AK, which is NAD27. The vertical datum is NAVD88, except for AK, which is NAVD29. NED is a living dataset that is updated bimonthly to incorporate the "best available" DEM data. As more 1/3 arc second (10m) data covers the US, then this will also be a seamless dataset.

USGS National Hydrography Dataset (NHD) - http://nhd.usgs.gov/index.html

The National Hydrography Dataset (NHD) is a comprehensive set of digital spatial data that contains information about surface water features such as lakes, ponds, streams, rivers, springs and wells.

Maine Geographic Information System - http://megis.maine.gov/

The purpose of this Data Catalog is to provide the public with access to the digital geographic data produced by the GIS Executive Council, and Maine GeoLibrary Board. The Data Catalog is hosted and maintained by the Maine Office of GIS (MEGIS).
