The fall 2010 shotgun season (5-day) harvest was significantly greater in the 8 western WMUs (453 turkeys) than the fall 2009 harvest (296 turkeys), for a 53.4% increase. The major reason was probably the improved summer 2010 hatch, which produced greater numbers of turkeys to hunt. The number of permit-holders hunting in these western units has probably remained relatively the same during the past several years. Four southeastern units were newly opened to the fall shotgun season and had significant harvests. In fact, Unit J2 had the highest harvest (91 turkeys) of all 12 units open.

As of November 12, the fall 2010 turkey archery season harvest was 222 turkeys over 17 WMUs in the state, compared to the fall 2009 season total of 198 turkeys (a 12.1% increase). The southeastern units recorded the most archery turkeys: J2 (36); L (23); M (30); along with south-central Unit K (36).

As of November 12, the total statewide fall turkey harvest (222 archery and 677 shotgun) is 899 turkeys, compared to the 2009 total of 492 turkeys. The four southeastern units of J1, J2, L and M have accounted for 322 of the total of 899 turkeys, or 35.8%. The archery turkey season continues through December 15, except in WMU A, which is closed to fall turkey hunting. – Ted Walski, Fish and Game Turkey Project Leader
